Best Beaches in North Wildwood: Your Guide to Free Shore Beaches
March 14, 2026
North Wildwood's beaches are wide, sandy, and — here's the best part — completely free. No beach tags, no passes, no daily fees. It's one of the few remaining stretches of the Jersey Shore where you can walk onto the beach without reaching for your wallet. Here's everything you need to know.
Why North Wildwood Beaches Are Special
The beaches here are remarkably wide — in some spots, you'll walk several hundred feet from the dune line to the water. That means even on the busiest summer weekends, you never feel packed in. The sand is clean and soft, the water is shallow and gradual (perfect for kids), and the north end of the island tends to be significantly less crowded than the beaches near the boardwalk.
Best Beach Spots
The stretch between 2nd and 15th Avenues is the sweet spot — close enough to the boardwalk for convenience, but far enough north to avoid the biggest crowds. The beach near the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse (around JFK Boulevard) is particularly scenic and quieter. For the most space, head to the beaches above 16th Avenue — they're wide, uncrowded, and locals' favorites.
Beach Access & Lifeguards
Beach access points are at nearly every street end — just walk straight to the ocean. Lifeguards are on duty from approximately 10am to 5:30pm daily from mid-June through Labor Day. Outside of lifeguard hours, swimming is at your own risk. The beach patrol is professional and attentive — North Wildwood has one of the best safety records on the shore.
Beach Gear & What to Bring
Guests at The Shore House don't need to bring anything. We provide complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and cooler totes — just grab your gear from the pool deck and walk across the street. If you're not staying with us, bring a good umbrella (the sun is strong), plenty of sunscreen, and water. There are no boardwalk vendors on the North Wildwood beaches, so pack snacks.
Beach Rules to Know
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 1 through September 30 during the day (before 6am and after 6pm is fine). Beach bonfires are permitted with a free permit from the North Wildwood Fire Department. No glass containers on the beach. Surfing and boogie boarding are allowed in designated areas — check with the lifeguards for the day's surf zones.
Beyond the Beach
Low tide reveals tidal pools near the rock jetties — great for exploring with kids. The inlet area at the north tip offers excellent fishing. And if you want a change of scenery, the beaches in neighboring Wildwood and Wildwood Crest are equally free and just a short bike ride away.
Experience North Wildwood's beaches the easy way — complimentary gear, steps from the sand. Book your stay at The Shore House and skip the setup hassle.
